Visionary Art, Pagan Icons and Illustration

Mokosh and Veles Icon Visionary Art by Shirl Sazynski

Magic, the mystical and dreams inspire me, ephemeral experiences forming visionary art, poems, ritual, hymns and prose. As a volva, a traditional Norse priestess, my work shares the exquisite beauty and wonder of the Otherworld.

Ancient northern European images are almost exclusively visionary art, with ‘decorative’ motifs inspired by religious symbolism and mythology. While I draw from this same well, you may not recognize it as a ‘Viking’ or ‘Celtic’ style. Instead, I paint what appears to me.

Other images are connected with specific visions, while some are inspired by folklore, tarot and nature or illustrate stories.
